Success Stories And Twitter Branding

I was accepted to attend Tweethouse, hosted by Brian Solis (who just released his new book Engage). Some notes:

How do you earn trust on Twitter? - “I’m going to talk about what you want to talk about” - earn trust by listening, don’t just push stuff - it’s about listening and finding out how to serve your audience. Having a consistent voice throughout your company

Panelist @adventuregirl got 1.5 M followers on Twitter within a year by posting travel deals. Big companies started pushing the same content -> she asked her followers what they wanted to hear about -> is now posting her own travel experiences and hasn’t lost followers.

Thought: maybe you should give control of your social media to loyal fans.

Solis: “The more you participate in social media the less control you have of your brand? Wrong. We never had control to begin with. Ad departments THOUGHT they had control, but in reality their messages were interpreted differently by each person. With social media we can now see what those people think -> we actually have more control of our brands than before.”

To sum up - a few definitions of social media branding. Negative: - the equivalent of some guy going around a job fair handing out 100s of resumés just to get home and notice it says Master of Farts. Neutral/Positive: - just make sure they know your name and what it represents - advertising is walking on the street, branding is walking into your customer’s house and sitting on the couch - looking at your audience and finding out how to be a part of that. It’s not about yourself.

And finally: Companies doing it wrong on Twitter are the ones who don’t tell you why you should care about them.
